Types of Massage
Descriptions of some of the types of massage that I do:
Swedish massage
Swedish massage employs five different movements:
Effleurage
Effleurage is a series of long, gliding strokes. This is a relaxing
stroke.
Petrisage
Petrisage is a kneading of the muscles. It softens the muscles, flushes
out toxins, and allows the therapist to work deeper into the tissue.
Cross Fiber Friction
Cross Fiber Friction works against the grain of the muscles. This releases
scar tissue, and toxins.
Tapotement
Tapotement is a rhythmic percussion, most frequently administered with the
edge of the palm or the heel of the hand. It is primarily used as a stimulating
stroke. Increases blood flow along with a relaxing sensation. Mostly used
as a finishing maneuver.
Vibration
Vibration is the shaking of the muscles, similar to Tapotement, with the
same benefits.
Swedish massage is done with the person covered by a sheet and blanket,
a technique called draping. One part of the body
uncovered, massaged, and then covered up before moving on to another
part of the body.
Trigger Point
A static pressure is applied for 10 seconds, released then pressure applied for 10 more seconds in a pumping action while the client is breathing deeply.
The therapist and client work together as a team to maximize the effectiveness of the treatment. Trigger point is not a "Fluff and Buff massage" It is used to decrease accumulated waste products.
Deep Tissue
Deep tissue massage is a type of massage aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue.
Deep tissue
massage uses many of the same movements and techniques as Swedish massage,
but the pressure will generally be more intense. It is also a more
focused type of massage, as the therapist works to release chronic
muscle tension or knots (also known as "adhesions.")
Prenatal
This massage is the same as a regular massage, but with the client lying on their left side with a series of pillows or lying face down on body cushions. It helps relieve the mental and physical stress of pregnancy and can also aid toward relaxation during labor.
Hot Stone (Coming Soon!)
Uses the same techniques as a typical Swedish massage, but with the use
of hot, various sized Basalt stones. This helps release more toxins
because of the heat, and helps the muscles to relax faster.
Use of hot towels in Therapeutic, Reflexology, and Hot Stone massages.
